Description

We are looking for a passionate Soil Science Lead to join our team and spearhead our efforts in translating soil science into real-world regeneration solutions. You will play a pivotal role in designing grassland regeneration projects leading to increased soil health, soil organic carbon (SOC) accrual, enhanced biodiversity, and water quality improvement. We are seeking a talented individual who is motivated to work on tangible, scalable solutions that can help us tackle the climate, biodiversity and land degradation crises. The successful candidate will work with a world-class, purpose-driven team that moves at speed and strives for maximum impact.

What you’ll be doing

  • Working as part of the Solutions team, your expertise on soil science will help inform the design of high-quality rangeland/grassland regeneration projects around the world.
  • Collaborating with other team members and external partners to develop and implement data-driven regeneration initiatives focused on agricultural land management and SOC sequestration.
  • Leading our SOC modeling efforts, including SOC model selection, calibration and validation.
  • Helping devise and implement sound stratification sampling plans as well as SOC measurement and monitoring strategies, aiming for maximum impact of interpreting soil carbon stocks and stock changes, and transparency.
  • Analyzing and interpreting soil data using advanced statistical and modeling techniques, extracting meaningful patterns and relationships.
  • Informing the evolution of our SOC and Monitoring, Reporting, Verification (MRV) land regeneration tools in collaboration with the Product and Technology teams, including idea generation, requirements gathering, prototype build, feature prioritization, and tool validation.
  • Communicating research findings effectively through briefs, presentations, and webinars, bridging the gap between science and practical application.
  • Staying up-to-date on the latest advancements in soil methodologies within the voluntary carbon market and SOC research and modeling, continuously adapting and refining approaches to align with market trends and new scientific knowledge.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree or PhD in Soil Science, Environmental Science, or a related field with a strong emphasis on soil health, soil carbon sequestration, grazing and rangeland ecology, and sustainable agriculture
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in conducting applied research on SOC modeling and measurement in rangeland/grassland ecosystems
  • Proficiency in process-based SOC biogeochemical models (e.g., CENTURY, RothC, DNDC, MEMS) is essential; experience with soil methodologies within the voluntary carbon market is preferred
  • Strong quantitative skills and proficiency in advanced statistical software, including proficiency in R and/or Python
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, adept at navigating technical challenges and extracting actionable insights from data
  • Experience with field and laboratory methods for SOC analysis is highly desirable
  • Remote sensing and GIS knowledge and experience
  • Excellent collaboration and interpersonal skills, engaging diverse audiences with complex scientific concepts
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, across time zones, demonstrating initiative and a proactive approach
  • Excellent English communication and writing skills. Spanish is a plus
