Wood Mackenzie are an industry-leading research and advisory company that provides analysis and insight on the world’s natural resources with offices all around the globe. This role will be part of Wood Mackenzie’s Carbon research team, in the Carbon Management group.
Wood Mackenzie’s Carbon Research team aspires to enable clients across the energy value chain to understand and respond to market and portfolio-related climate risks and opportunities. We are a fast-growing team helping to drive the pace and scale of the energy transition and serving different customer segments with integrated analysis. Some of the services we provide include calculation and benchmarking of emissions across the full value chain of commodities, tracking and forecasting of carbon prices, and research and reporting on carbon markets.
Role Purpose
This role will serve as part of Carbon research team and is global in nature. This is an excellent opportunity to join a strong, global team and make a major contribution to decarbonization and the energy transition at a global scale.
As part of our global Carbon team, you will develop a deep understanding of compliance carbon pricing regimes. You will play an important role in the development and expansion of our carbon pricing and policy knowledge and offerings.
Importantly, you will also develop your own network with internal stakeholders, cross-functional teams and industry partners. This will be to establish a knowledge base to test assumptions on methodologies, as well as to represent Wood Mackenzie’s research in a high-quality way to customers.
Main responsibilities
We are looking for a Research Analyst who is expected to:
- Track regulatory updates from key jurisdictions and assess their strategies in carbon pricing and projects.
- Monitor the developments in carbon policies and compliance carbon pricing regimes, via primary research on compliance regimes around the world, including carbon tax, emission trading schemes, Article 6 and other relevant forms of carbon pricing.
- Collaborate with senior team members to support the development and delivery of market updates and outlooks.
- Contribute to research on emerging market trends, benchmarking studies, and project/deal pipelines.
- Develop expertise in APAC carbon market development, with opportunities to progressively create insights on regional analysis independently
- Progress toward independently communicating research findings via various channels such as reports, conferences (calls), webinars, and direct interactions with local stakeholders (business, industry, Chinese NOCs)
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues in the wider Carbon Management team, other subject-matter experts in research and cross-functional teams in the creation and delivery of the compliance carbon pricing offering under Wood Mackenzie’s carbon products and tools.
- Grow as an influential speaker and thinker internally and increasingly externally.

Qualifications
Knowledge and experience requirement
- 1-3 years of previous experience in carbon markets, climate policy, or ESG analysis. An understanding of various carbon pricing developments globally is desirable, while APAC market exposure is a plus. Prior experience in carbon pricing/policy modelling is a plus.
- Passionate with a profound intellectual curiosity about the role of carbon pricing in the broader decarbonisation transition.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with excellent attention to detail. Interested in using both qualitative and quantitative methods to answer market questions.
- Quantitative background with strong numerical modelling skills. Full proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel skills (including Power Query) are needed for the role. Knowledge of Python, R, or Power BI is advantageous. Advanced data visualisation skill is a plus.
- Strong communication skills in written and verbal English are necessary, with demonstrated ability and comfort in presentations. Proficiency in an APAC language (Mandarin, Japanese, Korean) is a strong advantage.
- Self-driven and being able to work independently. Capable of switching between the roles of an individual contributor and a collaborator.
