Installing solar power plants on abandoned coal mines could unlock nearly 300 GW of capacity by 2030, according to a study by Global Energy Monitor that identified 5,820 square kilometres of free land on coal mines that have closed since 2020, as well as those expected to shutter by the end of the decade.
