Romania will use EUA sale proceeds to extend the Bucharest subway system to its main airport ahead of several major football matches to be hosted by the city, local media reported on Wednesday,

The government has earmarked €42.8 million to help pay for extensions to two subway lines, including one to reach the Henri Coanda International Airport north of Bucharest, according to Romania-Insider.com.

The project is expected to be completed by 2020 and is seen reducing local traffic by nearly 5 million cars per year, according to studies.

The website reported that both the European Commission and UEFA have asked for the metro system to be extended to reach the airport, as Bucharest is to host matches of the 2020 UEFA European Football Championship.
