The Americas branch of spirits producer Remy Cointreau has teamed up with WWF-Mexico to protect and regenerate the Monarch butterfly across the Americas.

The Americas branch of spirits producer Remy Cointreau has teamed up with WWF-Mexico to protect and regenerate the Monarch butterfly across the Americas.

Together the two will replant more than 80,000 trees to increase the density of the butterfly’s natural wintering forest in Mexico and establish a series of 12 pollinator gardens to aid the Monarch’s annual 4,000 km migratory trek from North to South America.

“We are thrilled to partner with WWF Mexico to safeguard and rejuvenate the exceptional Monarch butterflies,” Nicolas Beckers, Remy Cointreau’s Americas CEO, said in a press release.

“The butterfly’s cause is intertwined with our purpose, as our spirits’ exceptional aromas stems from quality terroirs, prompting us to allocate resources for preserving butterfly vitality, soils, and ecosystems.”

Globally, around 50% of all butterflies have disappeared over the past half century, driven by factors such as deforestation, pesticide use, and climate change.

The Monarch butterfly was added to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in July last year.

Remy Cointreau is involved in a number of nature protection and restoration initiatives globally, and is converting towards regenerative agriculture on its estates around the world, which the company said will bring a significant reduction in the use of chemicals.

Its brand Remy Martin is also working with l’Observatoire Agricole de la Biodiversity to involve its winegrower partners in identifying and documenting butterflies, earthworms, and bees.

Working with WWF-Mexico will bring expertise to the Monarch project.

“Our unwavering commitment to the Monarch restoration project spans years,” said WWF-Mexico head of corporate, Nicolas Villa.

“The partnership with Remy Cointreau Americas exemplifies our shared drive to be part of the solution, while being intrinsically connected to issues of biodiversity health.”
