News and information provider Platts has cancelled the emissions trading conference it has held every September in Brussels, sources said.

A company spokeswoman had not responded to questions from Carbon Pulse regarding the decision by late Monday London time, but the conference had been suffering from poor attendance in the past few years.

The move leaves just two major European carbon market conferences on the calendar: Argus’ European Emissions Markets conference in Amsterdam every March, and the World Bank and IETA’s Carbon Expo, which alternates between Cologne and Barcelona each May.

Thomson Reuters in 2012 cancelled Point Carbon’s regular Carbon Market Insights conference, another popular annual event, after acquiring the company in 2010.

But carbon market enthusiasts dismayed by Platts’ decision will find solace in the news that European power sector lobby group Eurelectric will hold its own similar conference in Brussels in mid-September.

The event, which already boasts an impressive line-up of speakers including European Commission head honcho for climate change Jos Delbeke, UN climate chief Christiana Figueres (to be confirmed), and French COP 21 envoy Laurence Tubiana (also tbc), will focus on the role of market-based mechanisms in an international climate change treaty to be agreed at UN talks in Paris this December.
