GHG output in Germany, Europe’s biggest emitter, fell 4.3% in 2014 as a mild winter crimped demand for electricity, the country’s environment ministry said in a statement.
It said GHG emissions fell by around 41 million tonnes to 912 million tonnes and was the first drop in three years, according to preliminary data submitted to the European Commission.
The UK’s greenhouse gas emissions fell by 8.4% in 2014 thanks largely to a decrease in electricity production coupled with a drop in coal-based power, preliminary data showed.
Analysts polled by Carbon Pulse expect EU-wide emissions regulated by the EU ETS to have fallen by an average of 5.5% in 2014, ahead of the first official data due to be published by the Commission on Wednesday.
