Job Description:

Do you love solving challenging problems, thinking analytically, and working in groups? Are you passionate about developing innovative solutions to the climate crisis? Are you interested in being a foundational member of a quickly growing team at RMI?

RMI’s Climate Intelligence Program is seeking a Manager to join our Carbon Markets Initiative (CMI), which seeks to improve the transparency, efficiency, and quality of carbon credits and accelerating progress towards a 50 percent cut in global greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050. Through both research and action, the Carbon Markets Initiative is focused on improving data transparency and data integrity of carbon credits, building partnerships to accelerate high-quality credit procurement, and contributing analysis and applied learning to a range of partnerships, collaborations, and challenges in line with RMI’s THINK-DO-SCALE approach.

Position Overview

RMI’s managers are creative project leaders who mentor and manage team members to craft visionary yet practical solutions for the carbon markets. The Manager of the Carbon Markets Initiative will lead project teams and work closely with RMI’s Principals and Managing Directors to design and implement CMI’s work on bringing trust and transparency to the voluntary carbon markets. Specific responsibilities will include guiding the research and analysis of the associates/senior associates, shaping narratives and content to maximize the impact of our deliverables, managing projects within RMI’s guidelines, overseeing project budgets and staff resources to maximize impact and efficiency, and establishing a high-impact, collaborative team culture. Since this position will be instrumental in shaping the data-driven and technical substance of CMI’s work and deliverables, the ideal candidate will have existing expertise in carbon crediting data or carbon market design and experience managing either staff or projects – and bring both into the role. The CMI manager also works closely with CMI/CIP leadership to build and manage stakeholder relationships and advise on emerging opportunities to shape or grow our carbon markets related work. This position will report to the Principal for Carbon Markets.

Your responsibilities as a manager include:

  • Managing the execution and deliverables for specific projects within the Carbon Markets Initiative
  • Overseeing teams ranging from 5 – 15 (including both RMI internal employees and external partners)
  • Leading and contributing to research efforts and publications, including by managing the research and analytical activities of junior staff
  • Overseeing project budgets, in line with RMI’s internal processes and policies
  • Building and managing relationships with project partners and stakeholders
  • Providing professional development feedback and guidance to associates and senior associates
  • Contributing regularly to external interviews, videos, and publications
  • Ensuring team resources are effectively managed, in accordance with internal RMI processes, partner expectations, and the team’s overall strategy
  • Representing RMI as an industry expert at key conferences and other public speaking events
  • Cultivating a team culture that can balance nimble collaboration with a need to deliver technical, data-driven deliverables

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s level degree in sustainability, economics, finance, business, engineering, or environmental science and 5+ years of relevant experience, OR undergraduate degree and 7+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience and expertise in voluntary or compliance carbon markets or related field
  • Experience leading teams and managing complex project portfolios
  • Experience planning for and allocating team resources (budgets, skills, and time) to deliver high-impact results
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent time management, organization, entrepreneurship, and drive
  • Proven ability to be adaptable, curious, collaborative, and team-oriented

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background working directly with senior-level stakeholders in carbon markets (either voluntary or compliance markets)
  • Experience managing grant-driven and donor-driven projects
  • Experience with group facilitation and workshop design
  • Experience working among diverse groups with varying perspectives and/or facilitating challenging conversations
  • Ability to bring a start-up mentality to a large institution

We encourage anyone who is interested in this role to apply, regardless of whether you feel you meet 100% of the qualifications. Top candidates will bring their own unique perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds from a variety of industries along with many but not necessarily all the skills listed above. We offer professional learning and training opportunities to help you develop the skills you have yet to cultivate.
