In another step towards a more comprehensive data offering, Carbon Pulse has launched a free-access Article 6 Portal tracking international carbon market developments under the Paris Agreement.
The Article 6 Portal hosts data visualisations that demonstrate the gathering pace of UN carbon credit issuance and trading around the world.
It will be updated monthly or whenever there is a major development unveiled by the UNFCCC or governments.
Activity under Article 6 is taking off following a historic deal struck at COP29 in Baku last November, which saw international carbon market rules under the Paris Agreement finalised.
ARTICLE 6.2
Carbon Pulse is tracking the deals struck between parties to trade internationally transferred mitigation outcomes (ITMOs).
We are also visualising different project types and the Letters of Authorisation (LoAs) that project developers need before they can transfer Article 6 credits internationally.
One finding so far is that despite a large number of countries and project developers indicating their interest in Article 6 participation, relatively few LoAs have been issued.
ARTICLE 6.4
We are also tracking progress in creating a UNFCCC carbon crediting mechanism under Article 6.4.
COP29 agreed the standards and rules for a Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism (PACM) and observers expect the first issuance of credits later this year.
Carbon Pulse tracks the volume and types of Kyoto Protocol-era Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects requesting to transition to the PACM, as well as hundreds of new projects getting ready to enter the market.
We are also monitoring which countries have submitted their Designated National Authorities (DNAs) – the bodies that govern participation by countries in Article 6 – to the UNFCCC.
“The Article 6 Data Portal is a first step towards a more comprehensive data offering that will include a revamped VCM Portal and NDC Tracker,” said Roy Manuell, Carbon Pulse’s EMEA Markets Editor, adding that this tool will be available in front of the paywall (but requires a free Carbon Pulse login).
“In parallel, we are building out our data journalism through our Data Dive offering and greater use of visualisations in our day-to-day reporting,” said London-based correspondent Nick Ferris, who oversaw construction of the Portal and helps lead Carbon Pulse’s data journalism efforts.
Carbon Pulse welcomes interest from companies keen to work with us to expand our data offering. Please get in touch with Chief Strategy Officer Sonja van Renssen sonja@carbon-pulse.com for more information on these partnerships.
