QPM said its plans align with the federal government's Future Gas Strategy and Queensland’s own net zero roadmap, which sees a place for gas to back up renewables. Peaking plants can be switched on and ramp up quickly when renewables drop out of the grid. A final investment decision is expected next quarter.
- Mon 04:43Withdrawal - South Korea's largest electric utility Kepco has reportedly withdrawn a lawsuit against the country's environment ministry for the cancellation of around 633,000 emissions permits for 2021-23, according to Chosun Biz. The ministry argued that, based on the existing regulations, if the GHG emissions decrease to 50% or less of the allocation due to facility shutdowns, suspensions, or closures, the residual emission rights can be revoked. While the power company said the cancellation was unjust, the court determined that the decision was valid, as public interest takes precedence over property rights. Kepco filed a total of three lawsuits against the ministry regarding the matter, and in May lost successive lawsuits related to the cancellation of emissions allowances for 2021 and 2022.
- Mon 02:15Landmark investments - Australia's Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) has catalysed A$25.7 bln ($16.9 bln) in investment value to the renewable energy transition in the 12 months to June 30, 2025, it announced Monday. The government-owned green bank said last financial year it committed a record A$4.7 bln, including a record A$3.5 bln to renewable energy projects and grid infrastructure - 2.5 times more than the previous 12 months. The 2024-25 financial year saw increased activity and impact from the Rewiring the Nation fund, the Household Energy Upgrades Fund, and the Powering Australia Technology Fund, the CEFC said. CEFC CEO Ian Learmonth said the corporation was tapping into growing consumer sentiment in favour of measures to address climate change. Referring to BNEF research, the CEFC said Australia needs to invest some $59 bln every year between now and 2030 - 2.6 times current levels - to remain on target for net zero by 2050.
- Mon 01:46Repeal - Australian former Nationals party leader, MP Barnaby Joyce, on Monday introduced a private members bill to federal parliament attempting to repeal Australia's net zero emissions by 2050 target. The bill argues that the government's effort to reach net zero emissions is causing massive damage to the economy and it is exacerbating the cost-of-living crisis. The legislation seeks to repeal the Climate Change Act 2022, bills relating to the government's Future Made in Australia initiative, and the Net Zero Economy Authority Act 2024. It comes as the Coalition, made up of the Nationals and Liberal parties, is conducting an investigation into their electoral defeat on May 3, with its emissions reduction and net zero positions among the suite of policies up for review. Joyce has incorrectly told local media that Australia is part of a waning group of countries that are still committed to the Paris Agreement, and that nothing Australia does will contribute to addressing climate change.
- Mon 01:13Call from communities - Eighty eight organisations across the community sector have urged the Australian government to aim for a net zero emissions by 2035, according to a joint statement published Monday. Rapidly worsening climate change is hurting communities, the statement noted, with the community NGO sector being on the front line in responding to the impacts on people's mental and physical health, homes, jobs, and general quality of life. The letter noted that while there are challenges, many of the solutions needed to cut emissions more rapidly are readily available, such as large-scale renewables, more energy efficient and electric homes, workplaces, industry, and transport. Signatories of the statement included Amnesty International, Action Aid, Oxfam Australia, Anglicare Australia, among others. Australia is currently contemplating its 2035 NDC, and has legislated to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
