- Wed 02:48Broken record – Australia's CSIRO and the Australian Energy Market Operator have published their annual GenCost report, once again concluding that wind and solar, backed by storage, transmission, and limited gas or hydrogen generation, remains the lowest-cost pathway for Australia to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. The report said electricity generation costs are expected to east to around A$80-90/MWh ($55-62/MWh) by 2030, before rising to around A$100/MWh as ageing coal-fired power stations retire. A net zero compatible electricity system is expected to cost A$141-152/MWh including firming and transmission. It also reiterated draft findings that reducing electricity sector emissions any further than 0.02–0.05 tCO₂e/MWh would be more costly than reducing emissions elsewhere in the economy.
