The introduction of a ballot system to register forested land under the NZ ETS arose from legislative changes passed last year, in a bid to restrict the conversion of farmland. Under the new rules, up to 25% of individual farm land on LUC class 1-6 can be converted to exotic forest, and up to 15,000 ha of LUC class 6 farmland can be converted and registered under the ETS annually, allocated via two ballots each year. This inaugural ballot is for 7,500 ha, of which 2,000 ha is reserved for applications of up to 100 ha, the government said. The deadline for applications is July 22, and successful applicants will be notified once the ballot has been drawn.
