- Thu 16:37Up in the air - UK exporters may still face EU carbon border charges even if the two jurisdictions formally link their carbon trading systems (ETS) by 2027. According to Energy UK, speaking to Montel News, such linkage on its own would not automatically shield UK exports from costs under the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). In other words: while ETS linkage is meant to harmonise carbon pricing between the UK and EU, it does not guarantee exemption from CBAM levies. UK companies exporting to the EU could therefore still incur additional border-related carbon costs, the UK energy l0bby said.

- Thu 13:26Algae mitigation - Remediation of harmful algal blooms in lakes can significantly mitigate GHG emissions and provide durable carbon storage, according to a new study. The research strengthens the scientific basis for water-based mitigation of these blooms such as that carried out by BlueGreen Water Technologies. It found that treating blooms prevents their decomposition that otherwise releases significant methane and nitrous oxide, and that 23–45% of bloom-derived biomass carbon becomes stabilised in lake sediments for millennia after treatment. BlueGreen estimates its powder for algae self-destruction has the potential to remove 5-15 billion tonnes a year of carbon from fresh water, and 50-100 bln tonnes from the ocean.
