The Global Green Growth Institute has appointed a managing director at carbon finance firm C-Quest Capital as its new assistant director-general, to work under former UN climate chief Yvo de Boer.

Mahua Acharya will also take up a role as head of the Knowledge Solutions division at Seoul-based GGGI when she starts there in September, the intergovernmental group said on Wednesday.

Established in 2012 at the Rio+20 UN conference on sustainable development, GGGI supports low-carbon economic growth strategies in developing countries.

Acharya will be tasked with developing the GGGI’s Green Investment Advisory Services, which will help member countries “develop and seek financing for green investment projects, conceptualise knowledge products that build a strong theoretical and empirical base for green growth, build capacity for green growth implementation, and facilitate South-South cooperation”.

“GGGI’s new strategic plan places a strong emphasis on developing innovative green investment projects and proposals for developing countries, which is a priority I share from my years of working in green finance” she said.

Acharya is currently an MD with C-Quest Capital LLC based in Bangalore, India.

C-Quest, founded in 2008 and currently headed by ex-Goldman Sachs MD Ken Newcombe, develops Programmes of Activites (PoAs) under the CDM and earns CERs by distributing millions of small, energy-efficient household appliances, for example clean cookstoves.

“With (Mahua) on board, I am confident we will be better able to support our member countries to implement inclusive green growth plans and create an enabling environment for public and private investment in green growth,” said GGGI Director-General de Boer.

Acharya will also work with Miles Austin, previously executive director of the Climate Markets and Investment Association (CMIA), who joined GGGI’s Knowledge Solutions and Green Investment Advisory Services divisions earlier this year.
