Context: Plans, organizes and coordinates all aspects of the legislative and administrative advocacy program for the Sierra Club’s work on climate policy and impacts under the direction and in coordination with other federal policy staff, the chapters, the Federal & International Climate Campaign and the Beyond Coal Campaign, and other issues as assigned.
Scope: The Associate Director of Legislative and Administrative Advocacy for Climate Policy and Impacts has program responsibility and participates in the development of strategies and priorities for the Federal and International Climate Campaign. Produces educational materials and reports, does research, testifies, lobbies and serves as a technical resource. Represents the Sierra Club to government officials, the media and other organizations. Takes appropriate action to ensure that program goals and objectives are met.
- Develops and conducts federal legislative and administrative advocacy efforts to leverage climate impacted communities to push for clean energy solutions, and other issues as assigned. Works with national campaign, capacity and program staff and volunteer leadership to develop and carry out the programs/campaign plans.
- Lobbies members of Congress, other state/federal officials on behalf of the Club on issues relevant to climate policy. Develops relationships with elected public officials and their staffs. Develops and conducts lobby campaigns associated with the assigned national program targeting these decision makers. Works with Sierra Club chapters to develop climate solutions consistent with Sierra Club values and goals of inclusion, equity and environmental justice.
- Develops relationships with coalition partners, chapters and federal officials and their staff working on communities impacted by climate change. Develops and conducts administrative lobby campaigns associated with climate impacts.
- Conducts media outreach activities related to the campaign/program, including developing media outreach plans. Serves as issue expert for both reactive response and proactive pitching to media outlets in coordination with communications staff. Promotes volunteer media exposure.
- Develops educational and campaign issues information. This may include the writing, editing and distribution of fact sheets, newsletters, alerts and take actions, and political and educational materials. It may also include the writing, editing and reviewing of articles, blogs and social media content for conservation-related publications.
- Supports and provides professional expertise to staff and volunteers, with a focus on chapter staff and volunteers. Works to develop and ensure that volunteers assume meaningful leadership roles in the program/ campaign. Provides conservation and legislative/administrative advocacy training to volunteers.
- Represents the Sierra Club to the general public, media, allied groups and other outside officials.
- Performs miscellaneous duties as directed.
Knowledge & Skills:
- B.A./B.S. degree in Environmental Studies, Political Science, or a closely related field.
- 3 years’ experience as a Washington D.C. associate representative, or in a comparable position in another organization which includes experience planning and conducting a national level legislative campaign, including strategy, organizing, lobbying , media, and work with senior level political leaders.
- Excellent knowledge and background in the specific program field.
- Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated public speaking and media presentation ability.
- Experience, demonstrated skill and ability, in media relations. Includes effective television and radio presence, knowledge of media technologies including video, radio and print production processes.
- Prior experience and demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.
This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and Progressive Workers Union.
