Are you interested in shaping policies that will contribute to the role forestry plays in a lower emissions future for New Zealand? Do you have proven policy skills, an analytical mind and an eye for detail? Our team is working to deliver an improved Emissions Trading Scheme as part of the Government’s ambitious climate change agenda.

The Ministry for the Environment is looking for a Senior Policy Analyst with strong analytical skills to work on issues related to the role forestry plays in New Zealand’s Emissions Trading Scheme. The successful applicant will also contribute to policies that will shape forestry’s contribution to New Zealand’s low emissions future. This work will require a high level of engagement with other agencies, so the successful candidate will need work effectively with a number of different teams. Forestry related experience would be an advantage, but is not essential.

This is a permanent position based in our Wellington office.

We are looking for a Senior Policy Analyst to play a leadership role in a cross-agency work stream. You will work closely with teams in the Ministry’s Climate Change Directorate, but will have a strong outward facing focus too with other agencies, iwi, business, local government and multiple stakeholders. We are looking for people who can help us critically assess and provide advice to Ministers on policies that make sense and can support a lower emissions economy.

This role will have a particular focus on forestry and land sector climate change issues. New forest planting is one of the most important emission reduction options available to New Zealand and the Government is committed to scaling up investment in new forest planting. Our work on forestry within the NZ ETS also helps to support the ‘billion trees programme’.

The successful applicant will provide comprehensive, innovative, high quality advice, and help to build capability within the Ministry by providing leadership and coaching and mentoring others. You will use your excellent judgement and relationship management skills to influence stakeholders to achieve the Ministry’s outcomes.

If the following statements describe you, we want to hear from you:

  • Proven ability to help solve complex policy problems
  • Have highly developed conceptual and analytical skills and experience in developing and implementing workable solutions to complex problems
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills and the ability to build and grow collaborative and reciprocal relationships with others.
  • Proven ability to represent your organisation.

This is your opportunity to play a key role in supporting how New Zealand has a productive, low emissions economy that is resilient to a changing climate.
