Emissions Trader, Direct Energy – Calgary

We are looking for a strong team player who can work collaboratively at an industry-leading natural gas and power desk. The successful candidate will bring a deep expertise in North American environmental commodity markets, and create value through prudent risk-taking, and development of new products.

DE Business is the largest commercial and industrial retailer in North America based on customer numbers. It provides natural gas and electricity sales to small, medium and large-size businesses, public institutions, and government.


This is a senior role for an experienced professional with a proven track record. Candidates must have:

  • Minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in front-office commercial roles in trading and origination organizations at large energy companies
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a trader or originator with a successful track record of generating gross margin in North American emission markets including RGGI, California AB32, Acid Rain SOX/NOx, RPS (PJM or NEPOOL RECs)
  • Experience with natural gas or power markets
  • Capable of developing models based on supply demand fundaments to analyze energy and environmental markets
  • Expertise in regulatory engagement and deep understanding of legal, political and regulatory environment
  • Experience in policy analysis with a goal of understanding risks and opportunities created by legal and regulatory changes in environmental markets
  • Experience in collaborating with government relations and regulatory professionals to shape and advance policy advocacy
  • Experience in active participation in industry organizations
  • Experience in developing a book of customer business
  • Experience in structuring and contracting innovative deals, and experience in working with internal support functions such as legal, credit and risk management to get approvals
  • Excellent negotiation, relationship building, communication and presentation skills
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills
  • Undergraduate degree in a quantitative field such as engineering or finance followed by a graduate or professional qualification such as MBA or CFA

This is a strategic role aimed at creating a new line of business and positioning Direct Energy to benefit from a long-term growth opportunity in environmental commodities by leveraging our strengths in energy trading, origination, customer marketing and regulatory engagement.


This role is front-line commercial position tasked with creating value for Direct Energy and our customers. As part of the energy trading and origination team, you will work closely with natural gas and power originators, analysts, traders and regulatory professionals. You will provide expertise in North American emission markets to develop products and services through origination and trading of environmental commodities. You will optimize compliance costs for both Direct Energy and our customers. You will be expected to work collaboratively with other commodity marketers to create unique offerings consisting of energy and environmental attribute packages. You will originate supply of such products through structured transactions. You will need to be customer-focused, service oriented, risk-savvy, creative, analytical and market-responsive to create differentiated value. You will have direct responsibility for meeting material gross margin targets and develop a long-term sustainable book of business optimized around multi-commodity trading and origination. Key functions for the role include:

  • Lead development of fundamental, regulatory and inter-commodity analysis models
  • Optimize North American compliance costs for carbon, REC and other environmental exposures for Direct Energy
  • Develop cost optimization solutions for customers with compliance liabilities under North American carbon, REC and other environmental programs
  • Develop an origination book for customers that have compliance exposure
  • Create product and service offerings for corporate customers looking for green energy procurement
  • Develop a structured transactions book with renewable energy and offset developers to beneficially procure environmental commodities
  • Collaborate with power and gas originators to develop cross-selling and up-selling strategies. Create and sell value-added customized structured products for their accounts
  • Provide commercial insights and inputs to shape regulatory engagement
  • Actively participate in industry organizations to drive stakeholder engagement
  • Execute trades and manage risks within prescribed limits
  • Execute transactions in futures, options, swaps, forwards, and other instruments in exchange-cleared and bilateral OTC markets
  • Maintain relationships with brokers, exchanges, regulators and other market participants
  • Ensure that all trading and origination activities meet highest standards of compliance
